Salve to all! I was waiting for you. My name is Lucius Caecelius Apuleius, a Roman from the 5th century AD who lived in this residence on the outskirts of Tarraco. Although my house is now nothing more than a handful of ruins, I would love to show you what it was like to live here in my time.
If you turn around, please. Everyone. Everyone, please turn around. Look, I will show you three fundamental elements of our city. The first is a very long road that reaches the sea. The second is a manor house over there. And the third is the Christian basilica. This building was the center of the life of the Christian community of the time. In this large structure, we celebrated religious worship and also buried the faithful. In excavations here, the bodies of 132 people were recovered. We know, because they were very well fed, some even overweight, that this was the area where the upper-class people lived.
There, to the east of the road, we find a rectangular house with a central patio, undoubtedly owned by a wealthy family like mine. I remember we had an area where we received our guests with a kind of semicircular sofa where we could recline to eat delicious food, and which also served as a kind of stage for the shows that entertained those who came to visit us. On the east side of our house, we had the balnea. The balnea were private baths that were a key element for the life of a wealthy family like ours. It had three rooms for water of different temperatures: here the cold water, the warm water, and the hot water thanks to an oven that also kept the house, well, warm. I remember with much affection a decorative mosaic, which you can still visit because it is very well preserved, and you will find it there.
As I want you to have the most authentic Roman experience, I have prepared a very special challenge for you: to recover the 19 coins hidden in this enclosure. To do this, you will first have to cross the bathing area, where I have prepared a mapping projection for you to understand, through an artistic perspective of history, what our life was like there. And then, since you are here, you can immerse yourself in the 5th century through some very modern virtual reality glasses and complete your mission. I hope you enjoy the experience and alea iacta est.
